Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
